Va: Officer Charged With Murder, Was Cleared In Earlier Fatal Shooting

Rankin is the second Virginia Police Officer Indicted for murder in less than 20 days, the first and unrelated indicted for murder this past August was Former Fairfax Police Officer  Adam D. Torres in the killing of 46-year-old John Geer.

Portsmouth, Va.

Police officer Stephen Rankin 36-years-old was indicted for murder in the 1st degree and use of a firearm in commission of a felony.

Rankin was booked into custody after turning himself in on Thursday due to charges being tied to the shooting death of 18-year-old William Chapman II outside the Frederick Boulevard Wal-Mart last April.

Rankin had previously been cleared in a fatal shooting in 2011.

According to sources Rankin has been fired, and the Commonwealth’s Attorney Stephanie Morales did not recommend  Rankin be issued a bond.

A trial date will be set once Rankin is arraigned.
